Goals & Objectives
Goals
The BC Multi-Sectoral Aboriginal Leadership Initiative, working in the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations communities of Ehattesaht, Ahousaht, and Tseshaht, integrates the following primary goals to be achieved over 2 years of current funding, and beyond.
- Improved quality of life in Ehattesaht, Tseshaht, and Ahousaht as evaluated by community members. Possible factors include income, security, autonomy, employment, etc.
- A more self-sustaining community that takes responsibility and initiative in determining their priorities and taking ownership of these projects. Community participants will be making decisions regarding the exact nature of the projects to be developed.
- To create a replicable model for developing Aboriginal communities through the documentation of and evaluation of success.
- To assist government agencies to find and share better ways of working with First Nations through participation in the Initiative and through regular updates.
- Building of relationships of people in isolated and semi-isolated communities with outside resource people in business and civil society, for assistance for managing community projects.
Objectives
- One social action project in each community (3 total) through the capacity building of community participants in relationship with partners from the corporate and civil sectors.
- One economic action project in each community (3 total) through the capacity building of community participants in relationship with partners from the corporate and civil sectors.
- Entrepreneurial innovation of Nuu-chah-nulth community leaders to design and pilot two Action Projects in each community, indicating progress toward meeting their social and economic goals. The projects will illustrate the capacity of the Nuu-chah-nulth community leaders to devise and implement creative ways of improving the social conditions on reserves themselves.
- Identify roadblocks and obstacles to the social and economic development of First Nations through facilitated workshops and dialogue.
- Increased capacity of 17-20 emerging Nuu chah nulth leaders for leadership, management, communication, strategic planning, decision-making, conflict resolution, and documentation, through facilitated workshops, mentoring activities with the corporate and civil sectors, and the resources made available through the Project Leader.
- Cross-cultural relationships. Develop am atmosphere of trust where Aboriginal participants can work with corporate and civil sector participants to build relationships and problem solve together through facilitated sessions and the fostering of mentoring relationships.
- Build Capacity of non-Aboriginal participants to working in harmony with First Nations through facilitated sessions and the fostering of mentoring relationships.
- Dissemination. Document and make widely accessible the tools, curricula, and intellectual property developed in the Initiative in order to replicate the success in other First Nations Communities through the creation of a development toolbox.
